As violence continues to affect multiple regions around the world, Pope Leo XIV is urging the faithful to unite in prayer during a special vigil for peace at St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, April 11.
The Holy Father extended his invitation during his recent Easter celebrations and general audience, emphasizing the urgent need for spiritual solidarity amid ongoing conflicts. “Let us make heard the cry for peace that springs from our hearts!” the Pope said, according to Vatican News. He added, “For this reason, I invite everyone to join me in a prayer vigil for peace.”
The appeal comes despite a temporary ceasefire involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, as violence continues in other parts of the world, including Lebanon, Sudan, Ukraine, and Yemen. The Pope stressed that prayer must accompany diplomatic efforts, stating, “I urge that this period of delicate diplomatic work be accompanied by prayer,” according to Vatican News.

The vigil will center on themes of peace and hope, uniting Catholics across continents in prayer. Participants will pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, accompanied by meditations drawn from early Church Fathers such as St. Augustine of Hippo, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Ambrose of Milan.
In a powerful symbolic gesture, representatives from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania will light candles using the flame from the Lamp of Peace in Assisi, which burns at the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi. This act highlights the universal call to peace and unity within the Church.
The vigil will conclude with a reflection and final blessing from Pope Leo XIV, invoking God’s grace for peace across the world. Echoing his Easter message, the Pope reminded the faithful that true peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but a gift that transforms the human heart—one that must be sought through both prayer and action.
