As preparations continue for his upcoming Apostolic Journey to Africa, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message about the true purpose of aviation, urging that the skies be used for peace rather than destruction.
Speaking to representatives of Italy’s national airline and its partners, the Holy Father expressed deep gratitude for those who assist in his travels, noting that such journeys are part of a greater mission. Papal flights, he explained, are not merely logistical efforts but carry spiritual significance, as he travels the world “as ‘a messenger of peace,’” according to Vatican News.
He reflected on how these journeys foster unity, describing them as opportunities to build “bridges of dialogue, encounter, and fraternity,” according to Vatican News. The Pope emphasized that travel, especially at the service of the Church, should bring people closer together in mutual respect and understanding.
At the same time, Pope Leo XIV warned of the tragic misuse of aviation throughout history and in the present day. He lamented that aircraft, which have the potential to connect nations, are too often used in conflict.

“Airplanes should always be carriers of peace, never of war!” he said, adding that “no one should be afraid that threats of death and destruction might come from the sky,” according to Vatican News.
Recalling the devastation caused by aerial bombings during the twentieth century, the Pope expressed sorrow that such practices persist. “After the tragic experiences of the twentieth century, aerial bombings should have been banned forever!” he said. Yet, he acknowledged that they continue, warning that technological progress is being misused. “This is not progress; it is regression!” according to Vatican News.
Despite these concerns, the Holy Father reaffirmed the importance of continuing efforts toward peace. He thanked those who support his travels, recognizing their role in advancing the mission of the Gospel in a divided world.
“In our current scenario, it becomes even more important to trace routes of peace in the skies,” he said, expressing confidence in those who assist him in carrying out this mission, according to Vatican News.
The Pope’s remarks serve as both a reflection on history and a call to action, reminding the faithful that even modern advancements must remain rooted in the pursuit of peace and the dignity of every human life.
