Pope Leo XIV has taken an important step in the canonization process of six individuals whose lives reflect holiness in a variety of vocations, from bishops and priests to religious sisters and a devoted family man.
During a meeting at the Vatican with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, the Holy Father authorized the promulgation of new decrees that advance these causes, according to Vatican News.
Among those recognized is Servant of God Ludovico Altieri, a 19th-century bishop and cardinal. The Pope acknowledged his “offering of life,” a designation given to those who freely accept death out of charity and faith, according to Vatican News.

In addition, Pope Leo XIV recognized the heroic virtues of five other individuals, each of whom demonstrated exceptional faith and dedication in their respective paths. These include Father Edward Joseph Flanagan, founder of Boys Town, and Father Henri Caffarel, who established the international marriage movement Teams of Our Lady.
Also advanced are Sister Stanisława Samulowska of the Daughters of Charity, Sister María of Bethlehem of the Heart of Jesus Romero Algarín of the Handmaids of the Divine Heart, and Giuseppe Castagnetti, an Italian layman and father.
By recognizing their heroic virtues, the Church now grants them the title “Venerable,” marking a significant step toward possible beatification and canonization, according to Vatican News.
This latest development reflects the Church’s continued recognition that sanctity is lived out in many forms—through pastoral leadership, religious life, and even the quiet witness of family life.
