During his weekly General Audience at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV issued a solemn warning to the world, urging nations and peoples to remember the horrors of the Holocaust and to ensure that such evil is never repeated. His remarks came as the Church marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27.

Reflecting on the day of remembrance, the Holy Father recalled that the Holocaust “brought death to millions of Jews and to many other people,” according to Vatican News. He emphasized that remembering this tragedy is not merely historical, but moral, calling it “an annual occasion of painful remembrance.”

Pope Leo appealed directly to God, asking “the Almighty for the gift of a world no longer marked by antisemitism, nor by prejudice, oppression, and persecution against any human being,” according to Vatican News. His prayer echoed the Church’s longstanding commitment to the dignity of every human person, regardless of race, religion, or nationality.

Addressing the global community, the Pope renewed his call for vigilance, urging leaders and societies to act so that “the horror of genocide may never again be inflicted upon any people,” and so that the world may become “a society founded on mutual respect and the common good,” Vatican News reported.

The Holy Father also marked the occasion through a message shared on his official @Pontifex account. In the post, he reaffirmed that “the Church remains faithful to the unwavering position of the Declaration Nostra Aetate against every form of antisemitism,” adding that the Church “rejects any discrimination or harassment based on ethnicity, language, nationality, or religion,” according to Vatican News.

Pope Leo’s words serve as a reminder that remembrance carries responsibility, calling Catholics and all people of goodwill to oppose hatred in every form and to work actively for peace, justice, and human dignity in today’s world.
