Holiness Is for Everyone, Pope Leo XIV Reminds the Faithful

At his weekly General Audience, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful reminder that holiness is not reserved for a select few, but is a calling entrusted to every baptized Christian. Reflecting on the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Father urged the faithful to rediscover holiness as a lived reality in daily life.

Drawing from Lumen gentium, the Pope emphasized that the Church clearly teaches the universal call to holiness. “Holiness is not a privilege for the few, but a gift that commits every baptized person to strive for the perfection of charity,” he said, underscoring that all Christians are called to love God and neighbor fully, according to Vatican News.

The Pope pointed to martyrdom as the highest expression of holiness, describing it as the “supreme witness of faith and charity.” Yet he made clear that holiness is not limited to extraordinary acts. Rather, it is lived out in everyday faithfulness, whenever believers leave visible signs of love and faith in the world.

Central to this transformation is the grace received through the sacraments. The Holy Father explained that the Eucharist, in particular, nourishes the Christian life and conforms believers more closely to Christ. Holiness, he said, is not something we achieve on our own, but something we receive and respond to: it is “His gift, which is manifested in our daily life every time we receive it with joy and respond to Him with commitment,” according to Vatican News.

Pope Leo XIV also addressed the reality of sin within the Church, reminding the faithful that holiness does not mean perfection in this life. Instead, it calls each person to continual conversion. He described this as a “serious change of life,” rooted in God’s grace, which renews and transforms the human heart day by day.

The Pope highlighted the witness of those who live the evangelical counsels—poverty, chastity, and obedience—as a visible sign of total dedication to God. These, he said, are not burdens, but “liberating gifts of the Holy Spirit,” freeing the soul to love more fully and trust more deeply in God’s providence, according to Vatican News.

In a message of hope, the Holy Father reassured the faithful that no suffering is meaningless when united to Christ. “There is no human experience that God does not redeem,” he said, pointing to the Cross as the ultimate sign that even pain can become a path to holiness, according to Vatican News.

Concluding his catechesis, Pope Leo XIV entrusted all believers to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking her to guide and protect the faithful on their journey toward holiness—a journey not meant for a few, but for all.
