The Catholic Church in the United States will soon witness a long-awaited moment of grace as Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is set to be beatified this fall, marking a major step toward sainthood for one of the most influential Catholic voices of the 20th century.
According to Vatican News, Sheen will be beatified on September 24, 2026, during a solemn Mass in St. Louis, Missouri. The liturgy will be presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who will act on behalf of Pope Leo XIV.
Sheen’s journey toward sainthood has unfolded over decades. His life of heroic virtue was officially recognized in 2012 when Pope Benedict XVI declared him Venerable. Several years later, in 2019, Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to his intercession, a decisive step that “cleared Archbishop Sheen for beatification,” according to Vatican News.
Once beatified, he will be given the title “Blessed,” bringing him closer to canonization and recognition as a saint of the universal Church.

Born on May 8, 1895, in El Paso, Illinois, to an Irish Catholic family, Sheen discerned his vocation to the priesthood as a young adult and was ordained in 1919. His intellectual formation took him across the globe, including studies in Washington, Belgium, and Rome, equipping him for a life of teaching and evangelization.
Sheen became widely known not only as a theologian and bishop, but as a pioneer of Catholic media. His voice reached millions through radio and television, beginning with “The Catholic Hour,” which drew an estimated four million listeners. Later, his television program “Life is Worth Living” captivated audiences nationwide, with some 30 million viewers tuning in to hear his reflections on faith and moral life, according to Vatican News.
His ministry extended beyond media into pastoral leadership. He served as Bishop of Rochester, New York, for nearly two decades before being appointed Titular Archbishop of Newport in 1969.
Remembered for his clarity, wit, and deep love for Christ and His Church, Sheen’s preaching inspired generations of Catholics to live their faith more fully. He died on December 9, 1979, in New York at the age of 84.
The upcoming beatification is expected to draw the faithful from across the country, celebrating not only a remarkable life, but a powerful witness to evangelization in the modern age.
