In a historic move highlighting the Church’s ongoing commitment to faith-based learning, Pope Leo XIV will name St. John Henry Newman as a patron saint of Catholic education during the Vatican’s upcoming Jubilee of the World of Education.

The announcement comes as the Church prepares to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Gravissimum Educationis, the Second Vatican Council’s declaration on Christian education. The jubilee, which runs from October 27 to November 1, is expected to draw roughly 20,000 pilgrims to Rome.

A New Patron and Doctor of the Church

According to Catholic News Agency, the Holy Father will officially designate St. John Henry Newman as co-patron of education alongside St. Thomas Aquinas. The British cardinal and theologian—known for his profound writings on faith, conscience, and the development of doctrine—will also be declared the 38th Doctor of the Church during the jubilee’s closing Mass on November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints.

Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, described Newman as an “extraordinary educator and great inspiration for the philosophy of education.”

Reaffirming the Church’s Educational Mission

To mark this occasion, Pope Leo will also release a new document on October 28 reflecting on the enduring relevance of Gravissimum Educationis and the challenges facing Catholic schools and universities today.

Gravissimum Educationis has lost none of its bite since its publication,” the Pope writes in the upcoming document, according to Cardinal de Mendonça. “Since its reception, a constellation of works and charisms has been born … a spiritual and pedagogical heritage capable of crossing the 21st century and responding to the most pressing challenges.

The Pope’s message, as quoted by Catholic News Agency, underscores that the Church’s educational mission must continually adapt to the changing realities of the modern world. “This heritage is not set in stone: It is a compass that continues to point the way,” the Holy Father says. “Today’s expectations are no less than those the Church faced 60 years ago. Indeed, they have expanded and become more complex. … It is not enough to preserve: We must relaunch.

A Call to Renew Catholic Education

Pope Leo’s call to educators is both pastoral and prophetic: “I ask all educational institutions to inaugurate a season that speaks to the hearts of the new generations, recomposing knowledge and meaning, competence and responsibility, faith and life.

The Pope’s appeal reflects his concern for the growing cultural and moral fragmentation facing young people worldwide. “Rapid and profound changes expose children, adolescents, and young people to unprecedented fragility,” he warns.

According to the latest Vatican statistics shared at the October 22 press conference, there are over 230,000 Catholic universities and schools across 171 countries, serving nearly 72 million students.

Newman’s Enduring Legacy

St. John Henry Newman, canonized in 2019, devoted much of his life to the pursuit of truth through education. His Idea of a University remains one of the most influential texts on Catholic intellectual life. In elevating him as a patron of education, Pope Leo XIV is honoring not only Newman’s legacy but also the Church’s enduring belief that faith and reason are partners in the search for truth.

As the Church celebrates this Jubilee of Education, Newman’s witness offers a timely reminder: authentic education does more than inform—it transforms, shaping both mind and soul toward the fullness of truth in Christ.
