Archaeological discoveries along Israel’s Mediterranean coast continue to illuminate the historical setting of the New Testament, offering Catholics a rare opportunity to encounter the physical world in which early Christianity took root.

The ancient city of Caesarea Maritima, constructed under King Herod the Great between 22 and 10 BC, has long been known to historians as a major Roman administrative center. Recent archaeological attention, however, has renewed interest in the site for its direct connections to figures and events recorded in Sacred Scripture.

According to reporting by the Daily Mail, the remains of Caesarea include “a huge artificial harbor, aqueducts, a theater, and a stadium,” structures that reflect the scale and sophistication of Roman governance in Judea during the first century. This was the political environment in which the early Church emerged and spread.

Caesarea holds particular significance in the Acts of the Apostles. The Book of Acts repeatedly identifies the city as a hub of Roman authority and early Christian life, recounting that the Apostle Paul was imprisoned there for two years and brought before Roman officials for trial. Acts also describes Caesarea as the place where St. Peter baptized the first non-Jewish believer, marking a decisive moment in the Church’s mission to the Gentiles.

Among the most important archaeological finds at the site is the Pilate Stone, discovered in 1961 during excavations of a Roman theater. The limestone inscription names Pontius Pilate as “prefect of Judea,” providing the first direct archaeological evidence for the Roman official who presided over Jesus’ trial. Before its discovery, Pilate was known only from written sources, including the New Testament and brief references by historians.

The surviving portion of the inscription reads: “To this Divine Augusti Tiberieum, Pontius Pilate, prefect of Judea, has dedicated this,” according to the Daily Mail. The artifact dates to the period between AD 26 and 36, the same era identified in the Gospels. The Gospel of Luke situates Jesus’ public ministry within this historical framework, stating: “Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea.”

The original Pilate Stone is now preserved at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, while a replica stands at the Caesarea archaeological park.

Archaeologists have also uncovered evidence of early Christian worship at the site, including mosaics bearing New Testament texts. One inscription quotes Romans 13:3: “Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same,” a passage attributed to St. Paul and believed to date to the second century.

Historical sources further strengthen Caesarea’s importance. The Jewish historian Josephus Flavius described the city as a monumental harbor complex built by Herod, complete with underwater breakwaters and imperial statues. Centuries later, the Christian scholar Origen is believed to have lived in Caesarea, where he compiled a major scholarly edition of the Old Testament in Hebrew and Greek.

After the city’s destruction in 1265, Caesarea remained largely undisturbed for centuries, preserving layers of Roman and early Christian history. Since systematic excavations began in the mid-20th century, researchers have uncovered a governor’s palace and praetorium consistent with the judicial settings described in the New Testament.

Today, Caesarea Maritima stands as a living testament to the historical grounding of the Gospels. For Catholics, the site offers more than academic interest—it provides a tangible connection to the world in which Christ was proclaimed, the apostles preached, and the early Church took its first steps into history.
