Pope Leo XIV is calling for greater recognition of the women who serve within the Vatican, emphasizing that their professional abilities, perspectives and contributions strengthen the Church’s institutions and mission.
Speaking to representatives of the Women in the Vatican Association and the Association of Vatican Lay Workers, Pope Leo stressed that women should not simply be present within Vatican workplaces, but that their contributions should be increasingly appreciated.
According to Vatican News, the Pope described “the presence of women” in the Vatican as “a valuable asset that must be increasingly recognized and appreciated.”
The Holy Father highlighted the distinctive contributions women make through their professional expertise and their approach to relationships and human concerns.
Women bring “not only a special sensitivity toward people and relationships but also the full range of human, professional, and intellectual talents inherent in the female experience and perspective,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News.
He added that women’s “expertise, discernment, creativity, and practical approach” enrich Vatican institutions while helping them develop a broader understanding of the challenges they encounter.
The Pope’s remarks also placed the discussion within a larger Catholic understanding of work and human dignity.
At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming workplaces around the world, Pope Leo emphasized what he called the “irreplaceable centrality of the human person and the inalienable dignity of work.”
Quoting his encyclical Magnifica humanitas, the Pope said work “is not merely a tool, it expresses and enhances the dignity of our lives.”
That understanding of work, he suggested, is especially important within the Vatican, where employees are not simply performing ordinary institutional functions but participating in a shared ecclesial mission.
Pope Leo pointed to “community and unity” as two fundamental values that should characterize Vatican workplaces.
According to Vatican News, the Pope explained that those whose work supports the ministry of the Roman Pontiff together form an ecclesial community participating in the mission entrusted by Christ to St. Peter and his successors.
“With equal dignity, everyone contributes… to the same mission,” he said.
The Holy Father also addressed how workplace disagreements and difficulties should be handled.
While recognizing that workers’ associations can help strengthen community, Pope Leo cautioned against allowing those organizations to “drift into a stance of confrontation or conflict.”
Instead, he urged Vatican workers to rely on dialogue when problems emerge.
“The path of dialogue,” pursued with “confidence and creativity,” remains “the primary way forward,” the Pope said, according to Vatican News.
The emphasis reflects a broader theme Pope Leo has presented for the life of the Church: differences and difficulties should not automatically become divisions. Dialogue should instead provide a means of recognizing human dignity, resolving disagreements and strengthening communion.
The Pope concluded by describing the kind of workplace culture he hopes Vatican institutions will continue to build.
“As we walk this path together,” he said, “we will strive to build a workplace community where people are neither used nor sidelined, where we support one another and acknowledge everyone’s worth and competence, avoiding the seeds of dissatisfaction and resentment.”
For the Vatican itself, the message carries particular significance. The institutions serving the Pope are called not only to accomplish their work effectively, but also to reflect the dignity, communion and respect for the human person proclaimed by the Church.
And within that mission, Pope Leo made clear that the talents and contributions of women are not peripheral. They are an increasingly important part of the life and work of the Church.
