More than two decades after its original release, The Passion of the Christ is returning to the big screen, giving Catholics and other Christians an opportunity to experience its dramatic portrayal of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ in theaters once again.
The film will return to theaters nationwide Sept. 10–17, ahead of the planned 2027 release of Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One.
According to LifeSiteNews, prominent Catholic and Christian leaders are encouraging the faithful to revisit The Passion of the Christ, reflecting on the spiritual impact the film had when it first appeared in theaters in 2004.
Cardinal Raymond Burke described the film’s influence in striking terms.
“This work is truly monumental, a story which touched profoundly the hearts of many,” Cardinal Burke said.
Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, also recalled the effect the movie had on him more than 20 years ago.
“The Passion of the Christ film impacted me powerfully for the first time I saw it over 20 years ago,” Archbishop Coakley said, according to LifeSiteNews.
He said the theatrical return could introduce the film to viewers who never had the opportunity to experience it on the big screen.
“But to see it again on the big screen, I think, will have an impact on today’s viewers that maybe haven’t seen it,” Coakley said. “It’s a powerful portrayal of the Lord’s Passion and death, and I think it’s going to be as powerful in its rerelease as it was when it was first released in 2004.”
The original film follows the final hours of Christ’s earthly life, focusing intensely on His Passion, Crucifixion and death. Its graphic depiction of Christ’s suffering made the movie a cultural phenomenon while drawing audiences around the world to contemplate the events at the heart of the Christian faith.
Other Christian leaders are similarly pointing to the film’s enduring spiritual influence.
“I really felt that I had witnessed the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ,” Rev. Franklin Graham of Samaritan’s Purse said, according to LifeSiteNews. “It ignited an interest worldwide in the Word of God.”
Pastor Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, emphasized the communal dimension of returning to theaters.
“The Passion is more than a film,” Rodriguez said. “There are movies that you watch and there are movies that you experience. This is a moment for the Church of Jesus Christ to come together as one.”
Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, president of Franciscan University of Steubenville, connected the opportunity to revisit the film with the spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi.
“Saint Francis believed that if we could see what God has done for us, that would move our hearts,” Father Pivonka said, according to LifeSiteNews.
He encouraged Christians to experience the film again with their families and communities as anticipation builds for Gibson’s upcoming sequel.
“As we prepare for Mel Gibson’s next great movie, which I’m sure will be amazing, The Resurrection… I encourage you, your community, and your family to be able to once again experience the movie—the beauty that is The Passion of the Christ.”
The theatrical presentation will also offer audiences an updated technical experience. According to information reported by LifeSiteNews, the film has been remastered from its original camera negative in 4K. The new presentation includes an updated color pass supervised by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and a Dolby Atmos audio mix reviewed and approved by Gibson.
Moviegoers will also receive a first look at what comes next. Audiences attending the September rerelease are expected to see an exclusive behind-the-scenes preview of The Resurrection of the Christ.
The upcoming film will turn from the sacrifice of Calvary toward Christ’s victory over death, continuing the Gospel story that began with the Passion.
The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is scheduled to arrive in theaters May 6, 2027.
