Vatican Pushes Back After U.S. Envoy Suggests Pope Spoke Politically on Iran

A senior Vatican communications official has publicly defended Pope Leo XIV’s role as the Church’s spiritual leader after comments by the United States ambassador to the Holy See suggested the pope’s recent criticism of the U.S. military campaign in Iran should be viewed primarily as political.

According to The Washington Post, the exchange followed remarks by U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch, who argued in an interview with The New York Times that Pope Leo’s criticism of the conflict should be understood differently depending on whether he was acting as the head of the Catholic Church or as the sovereign of Vatican City.

“When the pope acts as the sovereign leader of the Holy See, he is coequal with world leaders,” Burch said in comments published by The New York Times and reported by The Washington Post.

The Vatican responded Monday through an opinion article published by Vatican News, the Holy See’s official news outlet. Although the article did not mention Burch by name, it directly challenged the idea that the pope’s statements on war, migration, and other moral issues should be viewed as political rather than spiritual.

Andrea Tornielli, editorial manager for the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, wrote that it is “misleading” to suggest Pope Leo was speaking merely as the leader of a sovereign state.

“Any glorification or exaggeration of the Pope’s role as head of state, any emphasis on the importance of this role, is … misleading because it comes at the expense of his one true mission as universal Shepherd,” Tornielli wrote, according to Vatican News and reported by The Washington Post.

Tornielli further emphasized that the pope’s public interventions on world affairs remain rooted in his pastoral mission.

“Even when he speaks about war and peace, migration or how to remain human in the age of artificial intelligence, the Successor of Peter remains, above all, a spiritual leader,” he wrote.

Addressing the pope’s role even more directly, Tornielli added, “The Successor of Peter is not speaking as a head of state. He is simply proclaiming the Gospel.”

According to The Washington Post, the disagreement comes amid an increasingly visible tension between Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration over issues including war and immigration. The report notes that Leo has repeatedly criticized the conflict involving Iran and has also spoken against immigration policies, while avoiding framing the disagreement as a personal conflict with President Donald Trump.

The Vatican’s latest response underscores the Holy See’s position that the pope’s moral teachings on international affairs are inseparable from his mission as the universal pastor of the Catholic Church, even when they address political events or government policies.
