The Hidden Physical Signs of Stress Every Catholic Should Know

Chronic stress can quietly take a toll on both body and soul, often revealing itself through unexpected physical symptoms long before many people recognize what is happening. While everyday challenges can strengthen resilience, health experts say prolonged stress should not be ignored because of its potential impact on overall well-being.

According to The Telegraph, experts distinguish between healthy, short-term stress and chronic stress. The article explains that “eustress” can improve performance and help people rise to life’s challenges, while ongoing stress can overwhelm the body’s natural defenses and contribute to physical and emotional illness.

Professor Carmine Pariante, a psychiatrist at King’s College London, explained that the body’s initial response to stress is designed to protect us.

“First of all, the Sympathetic Nervous System… is activated,” Pariante said, according to The Telegraph. “There is an increase in heart rate and blood pressure… adrenaline is stimulated, and the immune system is activated.”

He added that cortisol, often called the “stress hormone,” also plays an important role in helping people cope with difficult situations. However, he warned that “all is positive – until chronic stress results in long-term elevated cortisol and the body starts to react in negative ways. That’s when problems can occur.”

According to The Telegraph, chronic stress may contribute to symptoms that many people would not immediately connect with emotional strain. These can include involuntary eye twitching, a persistent metallic taste in the mouth, exhaustion that does not improve with rest, adult acne, temporary memory problems, and even an unexplained increase in the need to urinate.

Health experts interviewed by the publication emphasized that these symptoms may have many possible causes and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional when they persist. However, they also noted that reducing chronic stress may help lessen their severity.

Pariante encouraged people not to ignore the deeper causes of prolonged stress.

“It’s crucial to pinpoint what is really going on for you,” he said, according to The Telegraph. “Then you can try to alleviate the problem.”

He also highlighted the importance of relationships and community, saying, “Loneliness is a significant factor when it comes to stress, so reaching out to feel supported by your community or friends or family, is my number one piece of advice to those who are struggling.”

For Catholics, this reminder resonates with the Church’s understanding that human beings are created for communion with God and with one another. While professional medical care and counseling are valuable resources, the Christian life also offers spiritual practices that help sustain hope during difficult seasons.

Regular prayer, participation in the sacraments, time spent in Eucharistic adoration, and support from family and parish communities can provide strength alongside appropriate medical treatment. Scripture repeatedly reminds believers to entrust their anxieties to the Lord while seeking wisdom and help when burdens become heavy.

Experts cited by The Telegraph also recommended practical steps such as improving sleep, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, limiting excessive caffeine and alcohol, spending time in nature, and practicing reflective journaling as healthy ways to reduce chronic stress and promote recovery.

Although stress is an unavoidable part of life, recognizing its warning signs early and responding with both practical care and faith-filled hope can help prevent it from becoming a heavier burden.
