Vice President JD Vance is offering a personal look at his spiritual journey in a newly released memoir that explores his return to Christianity and eventual conversion to the Catholic faith.
According to LifeSiteNews, Vance’s new book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, was released Tuesday and serves as a reflection on the role faith has played throughout different stages of his life. The book follows his bestselling 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy and focuses on what publishers describe as his search for meaning after achieving personal and professional success.
Vance reportedly describes the work as a collection of reflections from “many years grappling with the meaning of religion in my life.”
Among the experiences highlighted in the book are the death of his grandmother, which Vance says contributed to a period of religious decline, and his years in law school, where he met his future wife, Usha. According to LifeSiteNews, Vance also credits entrepreneur Peter Thiel with challenging assumptions he held about faith and intelligence.
The vice president writes that Thiel “identified very openly as a Christian,” and that the encounter “defied the simple social template I had constructed – that dumb people were religious and smart people were atheists,” according to excerpts reported by LifeSiteNews.
Vance also recounts a visit to a cathedral in France with his family in 2018, describing a “distinct sense of belonging and presence” that became an important step on the path toward his conversion to Catholicism.
The book reportedly addresses the challenges of living out the Catholic faith while serving in public office. According to LifeSiteNews, Vance reflects on his interactions with Vatican officials during his time representing President Donald Trump’s administration.
“Here I was, the most senior Catholic in the United States government, and the Vatican seemed unwilling to move its moral guidance past the point of trite platitudes,” Vance writes. “I was struck that one of the few institutions with the moral authority and global perspective to address the migration question seemed so afraid of saying something controversial that it chose, effectively, to say nothing at all.”
The memoir also touches on the issue of abortion. According to LifeSiteNews, Vance argues that pro-life advocates should “start winning people over” by demonstrating Christian charity and helping address the economic pressures that can make pregnancy difficult for many families.
As speculation continues about Vance’s future political ambitions, Communion offers readers a deeper look at the faith convictions that have shaped one of the most prominent Catholic figures currently serving in American public life. The book presents a personal account of doubt, belief, and conversion, while also exploring how religious faith intersects with leadership and public service.
