Pope Leo XIV met privately with Puerto Rican recording artist Bad Bunny and members of his family during the Holy Father’s visit to Madrid, marking an unexpected encounter between the head of the Catholic Church and one of the world’s most recognizable music figures.
According to EWTN News, the meeting took place on June 8 at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium while both men were in the Spanish capital. Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, had been performing a series of concerts in Madrid during the same period as the pope’s apostolic visit.
The Vatican confirmed that the meeting occurred and stated that the pope spent several minutes greeting and speaking with the singer and his family. As of publication, no photographs or additional details from the encounter have been released.
Prior to the meeting, speculation had circulated about whether the two might cross paths during their time in Madrid. Cardinal José Cobo Cano, Archbishop of Madrid, addressed the possibility in comments reported by EWTN News.
“The pope is never closed to speaking with anyone who wishes to enter into dialogue with him,” Cardinal Cobo said.
The cardinal also noted that any such meeting would depend on the circumstances of those involved. “If that were to happen at some point, we certainly wouldn’t rule it out, but it depends on the two of them. What is true is that Madrid is a very large city and can host various events on the same day,” he added, according to EWTN News.
Bad Bunny remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary Latin music. However, his musical catalog has also drawn criticism from many Christians and cultural commentators because of lyrics and themes they view as vulgar or degrading to human dignity.
Following the artist’s appearance during this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, leaders within the Catholic Church in Puerto Rico reflected on his cultural influence. According to EWTN News, Bishop Eusebio Ramos, president of the Puerto Rico Bishops’ Conference, acknowledged positive aspects of some of the singer’s public remarks while expressing reservations about his musical genre.
Ramos stated that while he would not endorse the style of music associated with the performer, he welcomed comments by the artist that “have reminded us of Christian values, such as fraternity and the primacy of love.”
The meeting highlights Pope Leo XIV’s willingness to engage with people from many different backgrounds, professions, and viewpoints. Throughout his pontificate, the Holy Father has repeatedly emphasized dialogue as a path toward encounter, even amid cultural and social differences.
While details of the conversation remain private, the brief encounter between the pope and one of Latin music’s most prominent artists has attracted international attention and sparked discussion about faith, culture, and the Church’s engagement with contemporary society.
