Why the Sacred Liturgy Matters More Than Ever Today

During his General Audience on June 3, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the sacred beauty and purpose of the Church’s liturgy, reminding the faithful that the rites, symbols, and gestures of worship are not empty ceremonies but powerful encounters with God that draw believers back to what is essential in life.

Continuing his catechetical series on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Father focused on Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, which was promulgated in 1963 and helped renew the Church’s liturgical life. According to Vatican News, the Pope emphasized that in a world filled with constant distractions and busyness, the liturgy provides a necessary pause that restores the soul.

“With the solemn simplicity of its rhythms, the rite interrupts our frenetic activities, leading us back to what is essential,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News. He explained that through the liturgy, Christians discover “another dimension of action” that is not measured by productivity or efficiency but by openness to God’s grace.

The Pope noted that the liturgical reforms encouraged by the Second Vatican Council were rooted in a deeper understanding of the liturgy as a living encounter with Christ. He stressed that the rites of the Church are not merely external actions but are the means through which God communicates His grace to His people.

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo explained that the Council helped the Church recognize that liturgical rites are not “a mere external covering of the sacramental mystery” but rather “the ecclesial mediation through which the divine gift reaches us.”

The Holy Father encouraged Catholics to participate fully in the liturgy with their entire being—body, mind, and heart. He warned against approaching worship as passive observers and instead called the faithful to active engagement in prayer, listening to Scripture, thanksgiving, adoration, and communion with one another.

He further observed that some people may find the structured nature of liturgical worship challenging in a culture that prizes spontaneity. Yet, according to Vatican News, Pope Leo insisted that the purpose of ritual is not to restrict freedom but to guide believers toward a deeper encounter with God and their own spiritual lives.

The Pope also highlighted the rich symbolism found throughout the Church’s liturgy. Reflecting on the use of holy water, he noted that it recalls both Baptism and the Christian’s call to new life in Christ. Water itself carries profound biblical significance, appearing throughout salvation history—from creation and the Flood to the Red Sea, the Jordan River, and ultimately the water flowing from Christ’s pierced side on the Cross.

Beyond signs, Pope Leo spoke about symbols as transformative actions that shape believers and strengthen their identity as members of Christ’s Body. According to Vatican News, he explained that symbols help foster belonging, touch both heart and mind, and give rise to authentic relationships within the Church.

Concluding his catechesis, the Holy Father invited Catholics to rediscover the beauty of sacred worship and to approach the liturgy with reverence and care.

“The experience of a living and devout liturgy, accompanied by appropriate mystagogical catechesis, is the best resource for reawakening in everyone that openness to the encounter with God,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News. He added that such an encounter follows the logic of the Incarnation, involving the whole human person—“spirit, soul and body.”

As Catholics continue to navigate an increasingly fast-paced and distracted world, Pope Leo’s message serves as a reminder that the liturgy is far more than a weekly obligation. It is a sacred gift through which Christ meets His people, renews their hearts, and draws them ever closer to Himself.
