Sacred Heart Consecration to Mark America’s 250th Anniversary

As the United States prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the nation’s Catholic bishops are preparing to place the country under the protection and love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

According to Vatican News, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart during its 2026 Spring Plenary Assembly, scheduled for June 10–12 in Orlando, Florida. The act of consecration is set to take place during a Mass on June 11, where the bishops will gather in prayer and reflection centered on devotion to the Sacred Heart.

The initiative comes just weeks before the nation marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. According to Vatican News, the bishops hope the consecration will inspire Catholics across the country to participate spiritually in the anniversary through prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and works of mercy.

In preparation for the consecration, parishes and individual Catholics are being encouraged to participate in “250 Hours of Adoration” and “250 Works of Mercy,” according to Vatican News. The consecration Mass and related events are also expected to be livestreamed through the USCCB’s YouTube channel, allowing Catholics nationwide to unite spiritually in the effort.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart has long been cherished within the Church as a reminder of Christ’s boundless mercy and love for humanity. Vatican News noted that in 2024, Pope Francis released the encyclical Dilexit nos (“He loved us”), which presented devotion to the Sacred Heart as a response to the growing “superficiality” of modern society.

The bishops’ assembly itself will address several major issues facing the Church in the United States and around the world. According to Vatican News, Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City will deliver his first address as president of the USCCB during the public sessions of the gathering. Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, is also expected to speak.

The bishops are scheduled to vote on several matters, including causes for canonization involving Msgr. Joseph Francis Buh and John Rick Miller. They will also review sections of a new Lectionary for Mass and consider approval of the 2025 Roman Missal–Liturgy of the Hours Supplement, according to Vatican News.

Another major topic of discussion will involve revisions to the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Vatican News reported that the proposed revisions seek to strengthen abuse prevention efforts while balancing “sensitivity to victim-survivors” with “due-process, rights of the accused, and Canon Law.”

The bishops are also expected to discuss preparations for World Youth Day 2027, along with updates on prison ministry outreach, implementation of the Synod process, and participation in the Intercontinental Guadalupan Novena beginning December 12.

For many Catholics, the upcoming consecration represents more than a ceremonial act. It is a national appeal for healing, renewal, and deeper trust in Christ at a time when the country faces growing division, uncertainty, and spiritual challenges.

By consecrating the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the bishops are inviting the faithful to turn once again to the Heart of Christ — a Heart that continues to offer mercy, peace, and hope to the world.
