Virgin Mary Statue Desecrated by Israeli Soldier

Israel’s military has launched an investigation after an image circulated online appearing to show an Israeli soldier desecrating a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon, raising renewed concern among Christians over attacks on religious symbols and holy sites during the ongoing regional conflict.

According to Al Jazeera, the photograph showed a soldier placing a cigarette into the mouth of a Marian statue while smoking himself in the Christian-majority village of Debel in southern Lebanon. The report said the Israeli military described the incident as grave and promised disciplinary action against the soldier.

The incident comes amid increasing tensions along Israel’s northern border and growing fears among Lebanese Christians who say churches, sacred images, and civilian infrastructure have suffered damage during military operations. The report noted that another Israeli soldier had previously been photographed damaging a statue of Jesus in the same village.

For Catholics, the desecration of sacred images carries deep spiritual significance. Statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary are not worshipped but honored as reminders of the faithful witness of the Mother of Christ and her closeness to believers around the world. Acts of mockery or destruction directed toward such images are often viewed by Christians as attacks not only on art or property, but on religious identity itself.

According to the report, Lebanese media also accused Israeli troops of destroying homes, roads, olive trees, and solar panels that supplied electricity for Debel’s water system. The destruction has reportedly intensified fears that many displaced residents may have no communities left to return to once fighting ends.

The controversy has also renewed wider concerns about the treatment of Christians throughout the region. Al Jazeera reported that religious groups have documented an increase in harassment and violence against Christian pilgrims, clergy, and Palestinian Christians, including assaults and spitting incidents near holy sites in Jerusalem.

One particularly disturbing incident involved a French nun near Jerusalem’s Old City. Video footage reportedly showed a man following the nun, “forcibly pushing her to the ground,” injuring her head, and later returning to kick her while she was on the ground before bystanders intervened.

Israeli authorities have publicly condemned several of these incidents after international backlash. Following outrage over the destruction of a Jesus statue in Debel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office reportedly issued a condemnation, while the two soldiers involved were removed from combat duty and sentenced to 30 days in jail.

The report also highlighted concerns over the broader destruction of religious sites during the war in Gaza. According to Al Jazeera, more than 800 mosques have reportedly been destroyed, including the historic Great Omari Mosque, whose 1,400-year-old minaret was damaged. Several churches have also reportedly been struck, including the ancient Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza, considered one of the oldest churches in the world.

As violence continues across the Holy Land and neighboring countries, many Catholic leaders have repeatedly called for respect for sacred places, protection of civilians, and renewed commitment to peace. Pope Francis and now Pope Leo XIV have consistently urged world leaders to pursue dialogue over destruction and to remember the dignity of every human person created in the image of God.
