In a message that underscores the Church’s mission in a divided world, Pope Leo XIV urged Catholics to bear witness to the truth through love, emphasizing dialogue, solidarity, and unity across nations.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Archdiocese of Cologne, the Holy Father reflected on the Church’s universal identity and its responsibility to reach all people. He stressed that evangelization must always be rooted in charity rather than force.

“In light of Christ’s Resurrection, the Church recognizes herself as being sent to all peoples—not by imposing herself, but by bearing witness to the truth in charity,” he said, according to Vatican News.

The Pope highlighted dialogue as a vital tool for the Church’s mission, noting that it is essential for fostering peace and unity. “Dialogue, in turn, strengthens communion, opens paths of understanding, and serves the cause of peace,” he added, according to Vatican News.

The visit marked the 50th anniversary of the Archdiocese’s Office for the Universal Church and Dialogue, a milestone that Pope Leo said reflects a long-standing commitment to global solidarity. He praised the German diocese for its “prophetic openness” to the universal nature of the Church, particularly through its efforts in international partnerships and humanitarian aid.

Among the examples cited were initiatives supporting the Eastern Churches through ROACO, as well as longstanding collaborations with dioceses around the world, including in Japan and Peru. These efforts, the Pope noted, demonstrate how the Church can tangibly live out its mission of unity and service.

Reflecting on his own past experience, Pope Leo recalled how the Archdiocese of Cologne aided the Church in Peru during his time as a bishop, including providing oxygen-producing machines that “saved many lives,” according to Vatican News.

He emphasized that such acts of charity reveal the Church’s true identity. “Through your generous service, the universal dimension of the Church is made visible and concrete, fostering solidarity, strengthening bonds of unity, and bearing witness to the Gospel of peace in a world so often marked by division and distress,” he said, according to Vatican News.

As conflicts and humanitarian crises continue to affect vulnerable populations around the globe, the Pope encouraged continued support for those suffering, especially Christians in the Middle East and displaced communities.

“I encourage you to persevere in this mission of charity, so that they may still experience the closeness of the universal Church,” he said, according to Vatican News.

The Pope’s message serves as a reminder that the Church’s credibility in the modern world depends not only on proclaiming truth, but on living it out through love, unity, and concrete acts of mercy.
