Pope Leo XIV Honors Pope Francis as a Faithful Shepherd One Year After His Death

One year after the passing of Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV is calling the faithful to remember a shepherd whose life and witness continue to shape the Church and the world.

In a message marking the anniversary, Pope Leo reflected on how deeply the late pontiff’s presence is still felt, noting that “his memory remains vivid in the Church and throughout the world,” according to Vatican News. Though unable to be in Rome due to an Apostolic Journey in Africa, the Holy Father assured those gathered of his spiritual closeness.

The message was delivered during a commemorative Mass at Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where Pope Francis is laid to rest. It was read aloud by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re to the faithful gathered in prayer.

Reflecting on the mystery of death through the lens of faith, Pope Leo emphasized the hope that Pope Francis tirelessly proclaimed, reminding believers that “death is not a wall, but a door that opens wide onto the Mercy that Pope Francis tirelessly proclaimed,” according to Vatican News.

The Holy Father also pointed to the late Pope’s tireless missionary spirit, recalling how he preached the Gospel of mercy “to everyone, everyone, everyone,” a phrase that became a hallmark of his pontificate. According to Vatican News, Pope Leo noted that the fruits of this witness reached “even to the ends of the earth,” strengthened by his many apostolic journeys and ultimately by “that final ‘journey’ which was his illness and his death.”

Pope Leo highlighted that Pope Francis led the Church during a time of profound global change, offering what he described as a “courageous witness” that remains a lasting gift to the Church. He underscored that Francis lived his mission fully, stating that he “remained a disciple of the Lord, faithful to his Baptism and to his consecration in episcopal ministry until the end,” according to Vatican News.

The message also emphasized Pope Francis’ deep connection to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, especially his call for a missionary Church rooted in hope. Pope Leo recalled how his predecessor urged the faithful to be “open to mission” and to proclaim a Gospel that brings fulfillment and joy to every human life.

Even now, Pope Leo said, the voice of Pope Francis continues to echo in the Church. “We can still hear his exhortations resounding,” he reflected, pointing to the late Pope’s memorable language—“mercy, peace, fraternity, the smell of the sheep, a field hospital”—which made the Gospel accessible and alive for many, according to Vatican News.

The anniversary also carries a deeply symbolic meaning. Pope Leo noted that the Lord called Pope Francis home on April 21 “at the heart of the Easter light,” marking the completion of his earthly journey in “the embrace of the Risen Christ,” inspired by the joy he so often preached.

Central to Pope Francis’ life was his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Leo recalled how the late Pope frequently visited Marian shrines, especially Saint Mary Major, entrusting his ministry and mission to her care.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo entrusted the Church to Mary’s intercession, praying that the faithful may become “tireless apostles” of Christ and witnesses of His merciful love, according to Vatican News.

As the Church marks this solemn anniversary, Pope Francis’ legacy endures—not only in memory, but in the ongoing call to live the Gospel with mercy, courage, and unwavering faith.
