High in the mountains of eastern Turkey, a long-debated site tied to the biblical account of Noah’s Ark is once again drawing attention after researchers reported new underground findings that some believe could align with Scripture.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, a team of American researchers studying the Durupınar Formation near Mount Ararat has identified what they describe as structured voids beneath the surface—features that may resemble internal compartments of a large vessel.
Andrew Jones, an independent researcher working with Noah’s Ark Scans, said ground-penetrating radar revealed a pattern of tunnels and chambers beneath the site. “What’s interesting is that these voids are lining up below the ground—and they’re not just random. These tunnels also follow a pattern,” Jones explained, according to the report.
The team believes the layout could correspond to the biblical description found in Genesis, where the Ark is said to have multiple levels designed to house Noah, his family, and animals. “This is not what you’d expect to see if the site were simply a solid block of rock or the result of random mudflow debris,” Jones said. “But it is exactly what you’d expect to find if this were a man-made boat, consistent with the biblical specifications of Noah’s Ark.”
The Durupınar Formation, located about 18 miles south of Mount Ararat, has intrigued researchers since its discovery in 1948 after heavy rains and earthquakes exposed its unusual shape. The Bible states that the Ark came to rest on the “mountains of Ararat” following the great flood, a detail that has fueled decades of exploration and debate.
In addition to radar scans, researchers have conducted soil testing and infrared studies. According to the Daily Mail, samples taken from the site revealed elevated potassium levels, which some researchers associate with decomposed wood.
Jones also noted visible differences in vegetation at the site. “We noticed that the grass growing within the boat-shaped formation is a different color compared to the area just outside it,” he said, suggesting this could indicate a non-natural structure beneath the surface.
Another member of the team, William Crabtree, reported that one tunnel-like feature appears large enough for a person to walk through, further raising questions about the site’s origin.
Despite these claims, many scientists continue to argue that the formation is a natural geological structure. The question of whether physical evidence of Noah’s Ark can ever be definitively proven remains unresolved.
For Catholics, the account of Noah’s Ark, found in Genesis 6–9, is not only a story of survival but a powerful reminder of God’s justice and mercy. The Ark has long been seen as a symbol of salvation—prefiguring the Church as a refuge for humanity amid the storms of sin.
While scientific investigations may continue, the deeper truth of the biblical narrative points beyond physical remains to a spiritual reality: God’s enduring covenant with His people.
