Pope Leo XIV in Algeria Calls Christians to Prayer, Charity, and Unity as Witness of Peace

During his visit to Algeria, Pope Leo XIV delivered a message of encouragement and mission to the local Christian community, urging them to remain steadfast in prayer, charity, and unity amid a complex social and religious landscape.

Speaking at the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa in Algiers, the Holy Father expressed deep affection for the faithful, describing their presence as “discreet and precious,” and rooted in “an ancient heritage and by luminous witnesses of the faith,” according to Vatican News.

The Pope reflected on the sacrifices made by the Church in Algeria, recalling in particular the nineteen religious men and women killed during the violence of the 1990s. These martyrs, he said, chose “to stand alongside this people in its joys and sorrows,” and their witness endures, as “their blood is a living seed that never ceases to bear fruit,” according to Vatican News.

He also pointed to the rich Christian history of the region, noting that it was once home to great saints such as Augustine of Hippo and Saint Monica, whose legacy continues to inspire the Church today.

At the heart of his message was the necessity of prayer. “We all need to pray,” the Pope said, echoing the teaching of Pope John Paul II that “man cannot live without prayer, any more than he can live without breathing,” according to Vatican News. He emphasized that prayer is not only personal, but transformative for communities, explaining that it “unites, humanises, strengthens, and purifies the heart.”

Turning to the Church’s charitable mission, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the quiet yet powerful service offered to the most vulnerable, including children with disabilities and their families. He reminded the faithful that true charity goes beyond material aid. “Mercy and service are about more than just providing material help,” he said, describing such acts as “an opportunity for grace,” according to Vatican News.

The Pope also underscored the importance of unity and peace, themes central to his visit. Drawing from the Gospel greeting, “Peace be with you,” he called the Christian community to be a visible sign of harmony in a divided world. He described the local Church as “a Church of living stones, where communion between Christians and Muslims takes shape under the mantle of Our Lady of Africa,” according to Vatican News.

In a particularly powerful reflection, Pope Leo XIV used the image of Algeria’s vast desert to illustrate humanity’s need for one another and for God. “In the desert, no one can survive alone,” he said, noting that recognizing human fragility opens the door to deeper solidarity and reconciliation, according to Vatican News.

He concluded by encouraging the faithful to remain “a cohesive and open community of faith,” assuring them of his prayers and entrusting them to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In a region where Christians are few but faithful, the Pope’s message serves as a reminder that even a small community, rooted in prayer and love, can become a powerful witness to Christ’s peace in the world.
