Los Angeles Archdiocese Cancels Cesar Chavez Mass Amid Abuse Allegations

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has announced it will not hold its annual Mass honoring labor leader Cesar Chavez in 2026 following serious allegations of past sexual abuse, according to EWTN News.

The decision comes in the wake of a March 18 report by the New York Times alleging that Chavez engaged in a “pattern” of sexual misconduct involving multiple young girls during the height of his public influence decades ago. The claims have prompted swift reactions from both Catholic and secular organizations that have long honored Chavez’s legacy.

An archdiocesan spokeswoman confirmed that the cancellation was not initiated solely by Church leadership but followed a request from Chavez’s family. “The Chavez family informed the archdiocese that they had decided not to move forward with having a Mass this year,” she said, according to EWTN News.

The annual liturgy, traditionally held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels each March, has served as a moment for Catholics in the nation’s largest diocese to reflect on Chavez’s advocacy for workers and his connection to Catholic social teaching. Chavez, who was known for his devotion to the faith, including regular Mass attendance, has long been regarded as a figure who sought to embody the Church’s call to justice and human dignity.

The allegations have also led other groups to reconsider their involvement in events connected to Chavez. The United Farm Workers of America, which Chavez helped found, described the accusations as “deeply troubling” and stated it would “not be taking part in any Cesar Chavez Day activities,” according to EWTN News.

Cesar Chavez Day, observed annually on March 31, was formally recognized in 2014 under President Barack Obama. In recent years, Chavez has remained a prominent cultural and political figure, even being honored with a bust in the Oval Office during President Joe Biden’s administration.

According to EWTN News, internal communications reviewed by investigators suggest that some union leaders may have been aware of misconduct allegations “for years,” while alleged victims were discouraged from coming forward publicly.

Within the Catholic Church, the response has reflected both sorrow and a renewed commitment to safeguarding the vulnerable. U.S. bishops’ spokesperson Chieko Noguchi described the allegations as “distressing” and said the bishops are “in the process of reviewing our website to identify references to [Chavez] for the purpose of removing them,” according to EWTN News.

Noguchi emphasized that historical references may remain where appropriate but underscored the Church’s broader mission, stating: “No matter where the abuse took place, the Catholic Church is committed to keeping children safe and accompanying survivors of abuse in their healing,” according to EWTN News.

Chavez had previously been praised by Catholic leaders for his efforts to promote workers’ rights in light of Catholic social teaching. The California Catholic bishops once noted that he was “profoundly influenced by Catholic social justice teaching,” and that he “strived to be a good disciple of the Lord Jesus by bringing the kingdom of God to the vineyards, fields, and groves of America,” according to EWTN News.

Despite this legacy, the recent allegations have prompted a reevaluation of how Chavez is remembered within Catholic institutions. The developments highlight the ongoing tension between honoring historical contributions and responding faithfully to credible accusations of wrongdoing.

As the Church continues to address the wounds caused by abuse, leaders have reiterated the importance of truth, accountability, and care for victims—principles that remain central to its mission in every generation.
