The Catholic Church has formally placed St. John Henry Newman on the General Roman Calendar, allowing his optional memorial to be celebrated worldwide each year on October 9, marking a major recognition of his lasting influence on Catholic theology, education, and spiritual life.

According to Vatican News, the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments released a decree on February 3 announcing that Pope Leo XIV has approved the inscription of St. John Henry Newman, a Doctor of the Church, into the Church’s universal liturgical calendar. The memorial is optional and will be observed on October 9, the anniversary of Newman’s conversion to Catholicism in 1845.

St. John Henry Newman was a 19th-century English Anglican priest who entered the Catholic Church after years of intense theological study and prayer. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2019. More recently, on November 1, 2025, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed him both a Doctor of the Church and co-Patron of the Church’s educational mission alongside St. Thomas Aquinas, according to Vatican News.

The decree explains that the decision reflects Newman’s “outstanding significance for the entire community of the faithful,” noting that his witness continues to shape the Church’s intellectual and spiritual life. As a result, the memorial will be incorporated into liturgical calendars and books used for the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours, with texts to be translated and approved by bishops’ conferences before final confirmation by the Dicastery, according to Vatican News.

Although the decree was made public in February, it was signed earlier on November 9, 2025, by Cardinal Arthur Roche, Prefect of the Dicastery, and Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, its Secretary, on the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, according to Vatican News.

The decree highlights Newman’s lifelong pursuit of truth and fidelity to God’s grace, recalling his conviction that “God has created me to do Him some definite service… I have a part in this great work; I am a link in a chain,” according to Vatican News. That interior clarity, the document explains, sustained his journey into the Catholic Church and strengthened his vocation as pastor, scholar, and servant of the poor.

Throughout his life, Newman devoted himself to preaching, teaching, and rigorous intellectual inquiry. The decree describes him as “a radiant light for the Church on pilgrimage through history,” emphasizing that his theological, ecclesiological, poetic, and devotional writings remain enduring gifts to the faithful, according to Vatican News.

The document concludes by presenting Newman’s lifelong effort to move “out of shadows and images into the fullness of the truth” as a model for Christians today, particularly in an age marked by confusion and fragmentation, according to Vatican News.

With his inscription into the General Roman Calendar, St. John Henry Newman’s witness is now formally placed before the universal Church, inviting Catholics around the world to draw inspiration from his faith, intellect, and unwavering search for truth.
