Pope Leo XIV is currently discerning whether the Holy See will participate in a newly established international initiative known as the Board of Peace, an effort spearheaded by U.S. President Donald Trump and presented as an alternative framework for resolving global conflicts.

Confirmation of the Vatican’s consideration came from the Holy See’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who acknowledged that the invitation has formally reached the Pope and is under review. “The pope has received the invitation and we are assessing what to do. We are examining it,” Parolin said, according to LifeSiteNews.

Cardinal Parolin noted that the invitation extended beyond the Vatican, explaining that “Trump is asking various countries to participate,” adding that Italy is also reflecting on whether to take part. The Board of Peace has already attracted participation from more than 20 nations, including Hungary and Argentina, with additional countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa reportedly joining.

The initiative has drawn attention in part because it is widely viewed as a potential rival to the United Nations. President Trump has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the UN’s effectiveness, stating, “The UN just hasn’t been very helpful,” while also remarking, “I’m a big fan of the UN, but it has never lived up to its potential.”

For many Catholics and pro-life advocates, the proposal has reignited long-standing concerns about the UN’s moral and ideological influence. Critics have frequently pointed to the organization’s promotion of policies at odds with Catholic teaching, including positions on abortion, family life, parental rights, and religious freedom. These tensions have led some conservative leaders to question whether new international structures could better respect national sovereignty and moral law.

Under the proposed structure, member countries would serve three-year terms, with the option to secure permanent seats through a substantial financial contribution. President Trump would serve indefinitely as chairman of the board, retaining authority to appoint executive members, remove participants, and reject decisions.

The Board of Peace was first announced last fall as part of Trump’s broader peace proposal for Gaza, though he has indicated that its scope would extend to other global conflicts. A signing ceremony for the initiative is reportedly planned in Davos, Switzerland, during the upcoming meeting of the World Economic Forum.

As the Vatican evaluates its potential involvement, Catholics around the world are watching closely. Any decision by Pope Leo XIV to engage with the Board of Peace would carry significant diplomatic and moral implications, reflecting the Church’s enduring mission to promote authentic peace grounded in justice, human dignity, and the Gospel.
