Pope Leo XIV offered a message of comfort and Christmas hope to people living with illness and disability during a special encounter held this week inside the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.

The meeting took place ahead of the pope’s weekly General Audience and was intentionally kept smaller to provide a more personal setting. Pope Leo explained that the decision was made out of concern for the well-being of those attending, noting, “We wanted to protect you a little from the elements: from the cold especially,” according to Vatican News. While the weather had held, he added, “perhaps this way you’ll be a little more comfortable.”

During the encounter, the Holy Father took time to personally greet and bless those present. He shared a heartfelt Christmas wish, asking the Lord “that the joy of this holiday season may accompany all of you, your families, and your loved ones,” according to Vatican News.

Pope Leo also encouraged those gathered to place their trust in God’s loving care, saying, “May you always be in the hands of the Lord, with confidence, with this love that only God can give us,” according to Vatican News.

After greeting each person individually, the pope proceeded to St. Peter’s Square to lead the General Audience, carrying with him the prayers and intentions of those he had just met as the Church continues its journey toward Christmas.
