Pope Leo XIV challenges Trump’s mass-deportation campaign, urges dignity for migrants

Pope Leo XIV offered renewed guidance on the moral dimensions of immigration policy this week, speaking candidly about the dignity owed to migrants and the responsibilities of nations to uphold justice.

While addressing reporters at Castel Gandolfo, the Holy Father emphasized that Catholic teaching calls for both respect for national borders and humane treatment of vulnerable people. His remarks came amid intensifying debate over the Trump administration’s large-scale deportation efforts.

According to The Daily Beast, the Pope said that governments must “look for ways of treating people humanely, treating people with the dignity that they have.” He reminded listeners that even those without legal status must be handled through just processes: “There are courts. There’s a system of justice.”

Pope Leo XIV rejected the idea that any country is obligated to open its borders entirely—“No one has said that the United States should have open borders. I think every country has the right to determine who enters, how, and when”—while warning against policies that disregard the humanity of people who have lived, worked, and raised families in the U.S. for many years. Treating such individuals “in a way that is, to say the least, extremely disrespectful, and with instances of violence, is troubling,” he said, as reported by The Daily Beast.

Catholic leaders in the United States have raised similar concerns for years, noting that many of those being rounded up in immigration raids are Catholics from Latin America. America’s bishops have previously described recent deportation sweeps as “indiscriminate mass deportation,” according to the same source.

The administration, for its part, has defended its actions. Citing internal figures, Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the government is on track to carry out “nearly 600,000” deportations by the end of the year, adding that “more than 2 million illegal aliens have left the U.S.,” including voluntary departures, according to The Daily Beast.

The Pope’s comments also followed reports that detained migrants in Illinois had been prevented from receiving Holy Communion. As The Daily Beast noted, Pope Leo urged authorities to ensure “pastoral workers” can minister to those in custody, stressing that religious liberty and basic dignity must never be suspended.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker—long at odds with the administration over immigration enforcement—met with Pope Leo XIV in Rome this week. According to The Daily Beast, Pritzker said the Pope “believes strongly that it’s our obligation as human beings to stand up for one another and especially because immigrants are often the most vulnerable.”

For American Catholics, the Pope’s message echoes the Church’s longstanding call to balance national sovereignty with the Gospel mandate to welcome and protect the stranger. Pope Leo XIV’s warnings underscore an urgent moral question: how a nation enforces its laws while safeguarding the dignity of every person made in the image of God.
