Yesterday, the Church celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a solemn reminder that what once stood as an instrument of death has become the ultimate sign of victory. Though the feast is marked each year on September 14, its message carries power for us on September 15, and every day after.
The Cross is not simply a relic of history. It is the lens through which we see the mystery of our salvation. As St. Paul wrote, “We proclaim Christ crucified… Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:23-24). What the world saw as defeat on Calvary, God transformed into the greatest triumph: the redemption of the human race.
The feast originated in the 4th century, when St. Helena discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem, and Emperor Constantine built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. For centuries, Christians have gathered to honor the wood that bore our Savior, lifting high the Cross as a sign that evil does not have the final word.
On the day after this feast, we are invited to live its meaning more deeply. The Cross is not only a historical event—it is a daily invitation. Every struggle, every act of love, every moment of suffering offered to God becomes a participation in Christ’s work of salvation.
Let us remember that even as we leave the feast behind on the calendar, we carry its message forward: through the Cross, joy has come into the world. May we never be afraid to embrace it, for by the Cross we find life.
