On August 15, the Church throughout the world celebrates one of the most glorious mysteries in salvation history: the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, body and soul, into heavenly glory. This solemnity is not only a radiant proclamation of Mary’s unique place in God’s plan but also a foretaste of the destiny prepared for all who remain faithful to Christ.

Mary’s Singular Privilege
From the moment of her Immaculate Conception, Mary was preserved from the stain of original sin in anticipation of her role as Mother of the Redeemer (cf. Lk 1:28). Her perfect holiness, maintained through a life of humility, obedience, and unwavering faith, prepared her to share uniquely in the victory of her Son over sin and death.
It is fitting, then, that she who bore the Author of Life should not see corruption in the grave (cf. Ps 16:10). The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
“The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians” (CCC 966).
By God’s grace, Mary’s earthly life was crowned with her entrance—body and soul—into the glory of heaven.
Scriptural and Apostolic Roots
While Sacred Scripture does not explicitly describe the Assumption, the mystery is deeply rooted in biblical imagery and the Church’s apostolic faith. In Revelation 12, we behold “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars”—a vision understood by the Church to point to both the people of God and, in a special way, to Mary, the Queen of Heaven.
The ancient Christian tradition, preserved in the liturgy and writings of the early Church Fathers, consistently honored Mary’s “Dormition” or “falling asleep” and her glorious reception into heaven. This belief was so universal that, in 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly defined it as a dogma of faith in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus.
A Pledge of Our Future Glory
The Assumption is not merely a Marian feast—it is a feast of Christian hope. What God has done for Mary, He desires to do for each of us: to raise us body and soul in the new creation, where death will be no more (cf. 1 Cor 15:51-57; Rev 21:4). Mary’s glorification is a promise that our mortal bodies, too, are destined for transformation, to be “like His glorious body” (Phil 3:21).
Living the Mystery
To honor Mary’s Assumption is to imitate her faith. She listened to God’s word, treasured it in her heart, and followed His will without reserve. If we walk as she walked, we will share in her reward.
On this solemn feast, let us lift our eyes to heaven where our Mother reigns beside her Son. Let us ask her intercession that we may persevere in grace, so that when our earthly journey ends, we too may hear the words:
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord” (Mt 25:23).
Prayer
O Mary, assumed into heaven,
you are our sign of certain hope and comfort.
Guide us ever closer to your Son,
and pray for us, that we may share with you
in the glory of His Resurrection. Amen.
