The Vatican’s Office for Liturgical Celebrations has released the public Mass schedule for Pope Leo XIV for the months of August and September, following his current retreat through July 20 at Castel Gandolfo, the traditional summer residence of the popes.

According to the official announcement, the Holy Father will begin August with a significant event: “On Aug. 3, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to celebrate Mass for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time at Tor Vergata University in Rome as part of the Jubilee of Youth.” This Mass is expected to draw large crowds of young people from across Italy and beyond, as part of the broader Jubilee Year celebrations.

Despite returning to the Vatican in August, Pope Leo XIV will return to Castel Gandolfo for a special feast day. “He is also scheduled to celebrate Mass at the pontifical parish of Castel Gandolfo on Friday, Aug. 15, the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,” according to the Vatican announcement. Following the Mass, the Pope will lead the Angelus prayer in the city’s central Liberty Square.

September brings a series of deeply spiritual and historic events, starting with the long-awaited canonization of two modern Catholic figures. “On Sunday, Sept. 7, the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, he will celebrate the eagerly awaited Mass for the canonization of Blesseds Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis, which will take place in St. Peter’s Square at 10 a.m. local time.” Both Frassati and Acutis have become beloved among youth and lay faithful for their exemplary lives of holiness and service in the modern era.

A week later, on “Sunday, Sept. 14, he will participate in the ecumenical commemoration of the new martyrs, witnesses to the faith, in St. Paul Outside the Walls Basilica at 5 p.m. local time.” This solemn gathering will honor those who have given their lives for the faith in recent decades, drawing attention to the enduring witness of Christian martyrs in the modern world.

To conclude the month, Pope Leo will preside at another Jubilee event. “On Sunday, Sept. 28, he will celebrate the Mass for the Jubilee of Catechists in St. Peter’s Square at 10 a.m. local time.” This celebration will recognize the crucial role catechists play in transmitting the faith across generations.

These upcoming liturgies reflect Pope Leo XIV’s ongoing commitment to evangelization, youth, ecumenism, and the role of lay witnesses in the Church. Faithful around the world are invited to participate spiritually and, where possible, in person during these historic celebrations.
