The Vatican has announced a new prayer initiative as Pope Francis continues his recovery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Beginning Monday evening, cardinals will lead a nightly rosary in St. Peter’s Square, gathering at 9 p.m. Rome time to pray for the Holy Father’s health.
“Starting this evening, the cardinals residing in Rome, along with all collaborators of the Roman Curia and the Diocese of Rome, responding to the sentiments of the people of God, will gather in St. Peter’s Square at 9 p.m. to recite the holy rosary for the health of the Holy Father,” the Holy See Press Office said in a statement, according to reports.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin will preside over the first prayer service, which will be broadcast live across EWTN’s television networks and digital platforms. Catholics around the world are encouraged to unite in prayer with those in Rome by participating through EWTN’s mobile app and YouTube channel.
The prayer initiative follows Pope Francis’ hospitalization on February 14 due to what the Vatican initially described as a mild flu condition. His health has since raised concerns after experiencing a respiratory episode on Saturday, which required a blood transfusion due to anemia. According to Vatican sources, both his anemia and a mild early-stage kidney insufficiency are currently under control. The Holy Father is receiving supplemental oxygen and remains under close medical supervision.
Despite his condition, the pope’s spirit remains strong. During the Sunday Angelus message, which was read on his behalf, he expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he has received during this time. On Monday, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis had a “peaceful night” and is “in good spirits” as he follows his prescribed therapies.
Catholics unable to travel to Rome can still participate in this powerful prayer effort. “The rosary will be available on EWTN’s television channels worldwide and through the network’s digital platforms, including its mobile app and YouTube channel,” according to Vatican sources.
As the global Church unites in prayer, let us entrust Pope Francis to the loving care of Our Lady and ask for her intercession in his healing. May this time of prayer strengthen the bond of faith among the faithful and bring comfort to our Holy Father in his time of need.
