The commandment to “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12) is not a mere suggestion but a divine directive that fosters the foundation of healthy families and a stable society. Yet, in today’s world, this sacred bond is under attack. The rise of technology, particularly cell phones, has created a chasm between parents and children, leading to apathy, rebellion, and moral decay.
Children are often glued to their screens, absorbing content that erodes their innocence and moral compass. They learn to cuss, lie, and even view pornography—poison for their souls. The digital world has become a substitute for real relationships, reducing family time to fragmented conversations interrupted by notifications. The result is a generation adrift, detached from their parents and, more critically, from God.
As Catholics, we must ask: how do we fight back? The answer lies in returning to the truths of our faith and reclaiming our roles as spiritual and moral leaders in the home.
First, parents must prioritize their own spiritual lives. Children learn by example. A home rooted in prayer, Scripture reading, and active participation in the Sacraments creates fertile ground for faith to flourish. Parents must lead with love, patience, and firmness, establishing boundaries that protect their children from harmful influences.
Second, reclaim family time. Implement rules that limit screen use, especially during meals and evenings. Use this time to discuss the day, read Scripture, and pray together as a family. Rediscover the art of storytelling, share family history, and cultivate real connections.
Third, teach your children to see their worth in God’s eyes. The world tells them they are valuable only when they conform to its image, but God tells them they are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Reinforce their identity as children of God, beloved and called to holiness.
Finally, entrust your children to Our Lady. Pray the Rosary as a family, asking Mary to intercede for their purity, faith, and protection. Teach them to turn to her and to Christ for strength.
This is a battle for the souls of our children, and it is one we must fight with prayer, courage, and unwavering faith. Together, we can reclaim this generation for Christ and restore the sacred commandment to honor our parents.
