Pope Francis Hospitalized for Treatment of Bronchitis, Vatican Confirms

Pope Francis was hospitalized on Friday for treatment of bronchitis, a condition he has reportedly been managing for a week. The Vatican confirmed the news to Fox News, stating that the Holy Father was “admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for necessary diagnostic tests and to continue hospital treatment for his ongoing bronchitis” (according to Fox News).

Despite his illness, Pope Francis continued his papal duties before his hospitalization. On Friday morning, he held scheduled audiences, including a meeting with CNN CEO Mark Thompson. The outlet later reported that Pope Francis was “mentally alert but struggling to speak for extended periods due to breathing difficulties” (according to Fox News). His resilience in fulfilling his responsibilities reflects his deep commitment to serving the Church, even in the face of personal health challenges.

At 88 years old, Pope Francis has faced multiple health concerns in recent years. He has undergone surgeries in both 2021 and 2023 and continues to deal with knee issues, which have led him to use a wheelchair. However, he has consistently downplayed these struggles, attributing them to his advancing age. In his autobiography, released in January, he wrote, “The reality is, quite simply, that I am old.” He also reassured the faithful, emphasizing that “the Church is governed using the head and the heart, not the legs” (according to Fox News).

Pope Francis’ hospitalization follows a series of recent physical setbacks. Last month, he suffered his second fall in just a few weeks, leading to his arm being placed in a sling. The Vatican clarified that he had “suffered a contusion on his right forearm, without fractures. The arm was immobilized as a precautionary measure” (according to Fox News). Additionally, he experienced a separate fall in December, which left him with a facial injury.

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has remained steadfast in his mission, advocating for social justice, care for the poor, and the dignity of all human life. As the faithful pray for his recovery, his unwavering dedication to the Church continues to inspire Catholics worldwide. Let us keep the Holy Father in our prayers, asking for his strength and healing during this time of illness.
